Macular Degeneration
What is Macular Degeneration?
Macular Degeneration (MD) is an eye condition that causes a grey spot to form in the center of the visual field. This can be a nuisance in everyday life because this part helps us see objects clearly and makes it possible to perform tasks such as reading and driving.
This eye condition is the leading cause of visual impairment among adults over the age of 50. Partly for this reason, this eye condition is often called “age-related macular degeneration” or AMD.
It is a progressive condition believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Being told that vision is affected can turn the world upside down. When the first emotions subside, the knowledge that one is not alone may provide support.
There are many people in the same situation, some who have just been diagnosed themselves and some who have been living with it for years. This eye condition can occur in “dry” and “wet” variants. The most common variant is dry MD, in which vision gradually deteriorates.
Wet MD is much less common and causes a faster deterioration of vision. If you experience poor vision as a result, there are aids available that can help with the tasks you have difficulty with. These aids can provide support with tasks that require vision and can help you continue to lead a full and independent life.
